Ingredients

  • 1 onion, chopped finely or pureed
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups ketchup 1 1/2 cups molasses (not blackstrap)
  • 2/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup spicy tomato juice
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)
  • 2 Tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1 Tbsp chipolte sauce (or 3 Tbsp liquid smoke, if you can find it - it's hard!)
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar (in place of worcestershire sauce which has anchovies in it)
  • 2 Tbsp light brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Preparation

  1. Put everything in a pot and bring to a boil over medium heat.
