This week PETA announced its 2013 top 10 veg-friendly baseball parks. The SF Giants were listed respectably in position four citing menus of veggie dogs, garlic fries, rice bowls and veg tacos across the park. I usually find the veggie dogs a boiled bore, and thought to myself - 'what hot dog would I want to eat at a park?' Well, this it! A grilled dog topped with creamy hummus and crunchy, salty herbed-cucumber salad. It's a summertime hit for a picnic, barbecue or for taking to your next outdoor sporting event.

Ingredients

  • 15 oz can chickpeas, drained (saving the liquid) and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup chickpea liquid
  • 1/3-1/2 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 large cucumber, about 1/2 lb, seeds removed and chopped
  • 2 oz feta, crumbled
  • 1 Tbsp EVOO
  • 1 Tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp fresh oregano, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 8 veggie dogs (I used Lightlife Smart Italian Sausages)
  • 8 hot dug buns (I used Alvarado St. Bakery Wheat Buns)

Preparation

  1. Heat grill or grill pan over medium heat.
  2. Meanwhile, make 1/2 my hummus recipeĀ using the ingredients listed above.
  3. Make the cucumber salad by tossing all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  4. Grill hot dogs, about 5 minutes on each side. Warm buns. To assemble, top dogs with about 2 Tbsp hummus and 1/4 cup cucumber salad. Serve warm or at room temperature.
